Chris Sun: 'Those who can adapt to life in HK under Top Talent Pass Scheme are truly talented'
In a recent interview on the program, Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun emphasized the need for talent as Hong Kong strives to recover from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sun highlighted the government's Top Talent Pass Scheme, which aims to attract highly skilled and well-educated individuals with high-paying jobs to develop their careers in Hong Kong.
Sun acknowledged that Hong Kong's high cost of living might challenge some, but he expressed confidence that those who adapt will thrive. "If they can adapt to the cost of living, they are undoubtedly talented individuals. If not, they can choose to leave," he remarked, underscoring the competitive nature of Hong Kong's job market.
Sun discussed his vision for enhancing support through medical collaboration regarding elderly care policies. He highlighted the importance of gathering more data to address hidden elderly populations earlier, including those who may be socially isolated. Sun pledged to focus on these issues in the remainder of his term.
Sun also touched on cross-border elderly care as an additional option for retirees. He suggested that elderly residents consider moving to Mainland China to "test the waters" and see if the environment suits them before making a long-term decision. However, he noted that the government would need to review healthcare subsidies and other related challenges to ensure the feasibility of this option.
In an effort to improve the living conditions of low income families, the government has launched a pilot project called the Community Living Room. Sun explained that with limited space in subdivided flats, it is essential to seek out larger areas to provide residents with better living conditions. He suggested that if businesses can provide space, NGOs could manage operations with government backing to ensure quicker implementation. Sun believes this approach will yield more immediate results than waiting for long-term public housing solutions.
Through initiatives like the Top Talent Pass Scheme, elderly care, and community living projects, Sun is optimistic about Hong Kong's path to recovery and its ability to enhance the quality of life for all residents.
