Super Typhoon Kong-rey made landfall in Taitung at approximately 1 p.m., weakening to a strong typhoon.
Taiwan's meteorological department noted that this marks the first time in 16 years that three storms have made landfall in Taiwan within a year, and Kong-rey is the first super typhoon to hit Taiwan in late October.
The disaster response center reported that the storm has injured 27 people so far, caused numerous trees to fall, and led to the loss of contact with two Czech tourists in Taroko National Park. As of 8 a.m., precautionary evacuations involved 8,600 people across nine counties and cities, with more than 1,300 people taking shelter.
By noon, Taiwan experienced widespread power outages affecting over 150,000 households, with Taitung County being the hardest hit. Taiwan Power Company stated that repairs would be carried out swiftly under safe conditions.
