Hong Kong low-cost airlines have introduced a new baggage policy called "Ultra Lite," allowing only one small personal item per passenger. A couple attempted to save HK$50 on baggage fees by secretly bringing a suitcase onto the plane. Although they succeeded on the outbound flight, they were refused boarding on their return journey. The couple ended up disposing of their suitcases on the spot, which drew huge criticism from netizens.
Recently, a couple from mainland China posted on Xiaohongshu, stating that after purchasing tickets from the Hong Kong low-cost airline to Japan, they were informed at the airport that they could only bring carry-on luggage onboard and that their suitcases could not be taken. If they checked their luggage at the counter, it would cost HK$600 for two pieces, and HK$800 once inside. The couple felt that two backpacks and two suitcases were not excessive, so they decided to take a chance and secretly bring the suitcases on board, planning to discard them if caught.
They managed to get through on the outbound flight, but on the return journey, they were stopped.
The wife explained that on the return flight, since they had little luggage, she stuffed everything from the suitcase into her backpack, successfully fitting the two smaller bags into the luggage bag. They then discarded the old suitcases at the scene. She expressed relief that the airline staff were very accommodating and allowed them to organize their belongings slowly.
Ultimately, she mentioned that they could have paid just an extra HK$50 to have carry-on luggage, but they opted to discard suitcases to save that amount.
After the post was shared, netizens deemed the couple's actions unwise, stating that it violated airline regulations. They noted that the Japanese ground staff were being polite by not confronting the passengers. This behavior, according to some netizens, not only disrupted counter operations but also wasted the time of those waiting behind them.
Netizens found it even more absurd that they would post such advice on Xiaohongshu. They left comments, "Well, you should just not travel abroad; it's really embarrassing." "It's not too much to be penalized for taking a chance." Others questioned, "How can you simply leave a suitcase at the airport?" "In Japan, leaving a suitcase lying around at the airport can result in a fine."
