Current privacy and copyright laws apply to AI: Privacy Commissioner
Ada Chung, Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, stated in a radio program that despite Hong Kong not having specific legislation for artificial intelligence (AI), current laws like The Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance (PDPO) and the Copyright Ordinance are applicable to AI.
This statement came as the Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD), along with 15 other global privacy or data protection authorities, issued a joint statement focusing on data extraction and privacy protection issues on social media platforms.
Chung highlighted that AI models require vast amounts of data for training, which includes a significant amount of data extraction from social media. The joint statement released aims to address the increasing trend of such activities. A similar statement had been issued in August of the previous year, reminding platforms to protect user data and this time a conclusive report was published.
She noted the rapid pace of technological development and emphasized that organizations should keep up with advancements to ensure data security. This includes implementing multiple security measures and regularly reviewing and updating them to safeguard data effectively.
