Chinapedia | Shanghai Metro: Easy navigation around world's city
As a world financial and cultural center, Shanghai prides itself on being the face of modernity in China. It is the destination for many of the first-time travelers who visit China.
As the city with the third-oldest rail transit system in China, Shanghai's metro system has expanded to 20 lines after more than 30 years of development. Just like New York City, Shanghai has the fame of a "world city," a metropolis that attracts and welcomes people from all over the world. The city makes great efforts to give foreign tourists a convenient and straightforward experience in navigating around the city.
Three ways of purchasing Metro tickets
Shanghai Metro adopts a distance-based fare system. Ticket fares start from RMB 3 for distances less than 6 kilometers, then an additional RMB 1 for each additional 10 kilometers.
Alipay
Most of the cities in China support using the Alipay Transit QR code in metro stations. Passengers who have set up an Alipay account can simply scan the QR code to enter the metro station. Passengers need to scan the QR code again to exit the station. The fare will be automatically calculated.
Shanghai Metro DADUHUI App
For passengers who don't have an Alipay account, they can download the Shanghai Metro DADUHUI App and add their international bank card to the App. The cardholders can then enjoy the same travel experience as Shanghai locals.
Pos Machines
For tourists who are simply traveling to Shanghai for a few days and don't want to go through the burdensome process of downloading Apps or setting up new accounts, they can buy metro tickets at the service centers in the station. All service centers of Shanghai's metro stations have added POS machines to facilitate the use of foreign bank cards for purchasing tickets since April 2024.
