The Commerce and Economic Development Bureau recently stated that to further refine the SIM card real-name registration system. The authorities will submit a legislative amendment proposal next year to the Legislative Council to prohibit the resale of SIM cards that have been registered under real names.
The bureau also proposed enhancing the 5G network capacity at major public event venues. According to documents submitted to the Legislative Council by the bureau, the current four mobile network operators have completed the setup and activation of 5G base stations near the Convention and Exhibition Centre, AsiaWorld-Expo, and Victoria Park, significantly increasing the 5G network capacity at these venues. Moreover, the projects to establish 5G base stations at the Central Waterfront Event Space, the Hong Kong Coliseum, and the Kai Tak Sports Park have been progressively initiated and will be activated in phases.
The bureau also mentioned that to further increase the transmission speed of Hong Kong's 5G network, the government will auction spectrum in the 850/900 MHz, 2.3 GHz, and the newly introduced 6/7 GHz bands next month. A total of 510 MHz of spectrum will be offered for public mobile communications services. The spectrum in the 6/7 GHz band will support the development of 6G technology, positioning Hong Kong among the first regions internationally to auction this spectrum, which will help catalyze market development and prepare for 6G advancements.
