Eric Chan: Projected 300 mn cross-boundary travels this year, plans to boost tourist measures
Eric Chan, Chief Secretary for Administration, announced today (Oct. 22) on social media that the government will progressively implement measures to increase tourists visiting Hong Kong based on actual circumstances. This comes following the introduction of several initiatives in the 2024 Policy Address aimed at boosting the tourism sector.
Chan noted that as of mid-October, mainland visitor arrivals had already surpassed 27 million this year, marking a 35% increase compared to the same period last year. The Immigration Department expects total cross-boundary travel movements to reach about 300 million for the year, returning to pre-pandemic levels.
The 2024 Policy Address also mentioned efforts to restore the Shenzhen "multiple-entry permit" for individual travelers and expand the trial of the "one trip per week" individual travel permit policy to central authorities.
Chan believes these measures will promote the development of the tourism sector as well as bring new opportunities and growth to industries such as dining, retail, cultural activities, and services.
He emphasized that the government will utilize Hong Kong's rich and unique tourism resources, driven by the principle of "tourism everywhere," to actively promote the development of the tourism industry and stimulate other economic and business activities. Chan called for unified efforts from all sectors of society to develop together and benefit the people's livelihood.
