Watch This | John Lee responds to legal arrangements for subdivided units, 'We don't live in a dream world'
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee delivered the third Policy Address on Wednesday (Oct.16). At the same day press conference, Lee explained more details about the government's legal arrangements for subdivided units.
SCMP's journalist asked Lee how transparent the government would be with the requirements and the corresponding criminal liabilities regarding the subdivided units. Is Lee worried about this decision going against Beijing's requirements to eliminate subdivided housing?
"Regarding subdivided flats, I think we have to be realistic as to why subdivided flats exist. " CE emphasized the actual needs of households at the first beginning. Being realistic and pragmatic is the priority in solving the problem of the lack of enough flats. "We don't live in a dream world," Lee said.
"When people are clear about the rules, the market, which now exists but is not properly regulated, will become regulated, supplying flats that satisfy the standard. I think that is what any government would want to do," Lee said.
Lee mentioned that the intention is not to legalize illegal things. The government wants to regulate residential flats that mainly create this market of subdivided flats, so the market will be providing flats of what we think will be a reasonable and liveable standard.
