The construction of two new steel-built explosive cargo transport vessels for the Hong Kong Marine Department has officially commenced today (Oct. 15).

These vessels, expected to be completed and operational by the first half of next year, will boost maritime transport in HK's waters, enhancing both safety and operational efficiency. This marks a significant step forward in the HKSAR Government's capacity for engineering and construction projects.

The new generation of explosive cargo transport vessels is 33 meters long, 7 meters wide, and has a depth of 3.5 meters. They will be primarily used by the Civil Engineering and Development Department to transport explosive materials for construction and land development projects in HK.

These vessels feature several technological advancements. A key upgrade is the unmanned cab, which integrates control, monitoring, and alarm systems, significantly improving operational efficiency. The vessels boast enhanced performance, including greater endurance, faster speeds, and a wider operational range, making them highly versatile for various maritime tasks.

Environmental sustainability has been prioritized in the vessels' design. They have systems to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions and ensure wastewater treatment compliance. Additionally, solar panels have been installed to power the ship's 220V electrical systems and charge the onboard 24V batteries.

In terms of comfort, the engine room's ventilation systems include noise reduction equipment, while soundproofing materials have been installed in working areas to improve the crew's working environment.

Safety has also been significantly upgraded. The cargo holds have advanced fire safety measures, including fixed fire detection and sprinkler systems. The vessels are equipped with alarm systems, video surveillance, and smoke sampling detection systems, providing full-scale monitoring for fire prevention and ensuring the safety of both cargo and crew.
