Organ donation appealed! 3-month-old girl urgently needs heart transplant

A three-month-old baby girl is in urgent need of a heart transplant. The Hospital Authority (HA) appealed today (Oct. 11) to the public to support organ donation and actively consider donating the heart of a deceased relative.

The baby girl is now in critical condition in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit of the Children's Hospital. Apart from actively searching for a suitable heart locally, HA will also seek help from the Mainland through the relevant procedures as soon as possible.

Suitable donors should weigh about 6-18 kilograms and their blood types are B+ and O+, while other blood types are also acceptable. According to the HA, a heart transplant is currently the only option to extend the life of the baby girl, and she has been included in the heart transplant waiting list, which is the first place for patients of the same body type.

The baby girl, who is in urgent need of a heart transplant, went to the Accident and Emergency Department of Pok Oi Hospital for treatment on the 14th of last month due to symptoms such as loss of appetite and vomiting. She was then transferred to Tuen Mun Hospital where she suffered from cardiogenic shock, and on the same day, she was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the Children's Hospital, where she was confirmed to be suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy. She underwent a pulmonary artery bandage surgery, but her condition deteriorated and she required cardiopulmonary resuscitation with extracorporeal membrane oxygenator (ECMO), ventilator and cardiotonic drugs.

Due to acute heart failure, she is in urgent need of a heart transplant, otherwise, her life will be in danger due to complications such as cardiac arrhythmia, hemorrhage and infection.
