Recently, a video on social media went viral online, showing a shabby old man holding a red plastic bag, walking through an MTR carriage, seemingly begging.
In a Facebook group, a user shared this video featuring the old man, who was dressed in tattered clothes and walking through the carriage with a red plastic bag containing numerous coins and a cigarette. At the time, there were many passengers in the carriage, but most did not pay attention to the old man's actions.
The video prompted a lively debate among netizens, with some commenting, "We must not condone this, or the subway will become chaotic in the future." Others remarked, "Did he buy a ticket to enter?" "Is he accepting Octopus cards?" "Is this performance art?" and "His business seems good." Additionally, some netizens recognized the old man as a frequent presence in the Mong Kok area, while others mentioned that he often begs in the MTR train around Central without paying the ticket.
In response to media inquiries, the MTR stated that they were unclear about the video's source and filming time but emphasized that staff regularly patrol the MTR premises. If they find anyone soliciting donations, they will ask them to leave. Passengers encountering disturbances can also contact staff at any time for follow-up.
