HKU, CUHK rank among top 50: Times Higher Education world university rankings

The University of Hong Kong (HKU), the highest-ranked university in Hong Kong, has secured 35th place in the world, while the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has risen from 53rd to 44th, entering the world's top 50 universities, according to Times Higher Education (THE) world university rankings for the year 2025.

The rankings of mainland universities have also risen steadily, with Tsinghua University being ranked 12th in the world for the seventh consecutive year, and Zhejiang University entering the world's top 50 for the first time.

A total of five universities in Hong Kong are ranked in the top 100 this time, with HKU remaining at 35th place in the world, being the highest-ranked Hong Kong institution. The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) has made significant progress from 53rd to 44th place in the world, and has entered the world's top 50. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has dropped slightly in the rankings, from 64th to 66th.

The City University of Hong Kong and The Hong Kong Polytechnic University have risen 2 and 3 places respectively, while Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has risen to 251-300th place from 301-350th place last year. HKBU responded that this is its best performance in the ranking since 2012, especially in terms of research quality and research environment.

In the 2021 THE world university rankings, the United States, which had 59 universities in the world's top 200, has dropped to 55; the United Kingdom has fallen from 29 to 25, and Germany has also seen a slight decline, from 21 to 20.

All of Australia's top-five universities fell the rankings. The rankings downgraded the University of Melbourne, Australia's top-ranked university, from 37th-best in the world to 39th, marking the institution's worst result in the 21-year history of the rankings.

During this period, only the Chinese mainland and Japan have added 6 and 3 universities respectively to the top 200.
