Tougher than DSE! 75% of residents fail sleep quality test in HK survey

To assess the sleep quality of residents in Hong Kong, HomeSquare, a one-stop home theme mall, collaborated with sleep and personal performance enhancement expert Cavan Chan. The study utilized a sleep quality test based on the research from the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to explore the sleeping habits of Hong Kong residents and unearth underlying sleep-related issues and concerns.

Out of 108 completed sleep quality tests, results showed that only 25% of participants passed, while a significant 75% failed. Prominent sleep issues identified included sleep apnea, waking up during the night, insomnia, and dry mouth, accounting for 20%, 20%, 15%, and 10% respectively.

The study also revealed that nearly 95% of participants believed they could fall asleep quickly; however, despite this belief, most still failed the test and reported feeling tired upon waking. This indicates a lack of awareness of potential sleep problems among nearly 95% of the respondents.

Chan pointed out that falling asleep quickly does not necessarily equate to good sleep habits, and many in Hong Kong misunderstand what constitutes quality sleep, potentially overlooking serious sleep health concerns.

Chan emphasized the close connection between sleep and overall health, noting that sleep deprivation not only affects mental health but can also lead to a vicious cycle of cognitive impairments, poor judgment, and heightened emotional responses, further exacerbating anxiety, depression, and stress.

Improving sleep health doesn't necessarily start with extending sleep duration. Chan suggests making consistent lifestyle adjustments, such as avoiding caffeine after 2 p.m., not eating or drinking alcohol four hours before bedtime, maintaining a regular sleep schedule, and establishing pre-sleep rituals like meditation, stretching, and breathing exercises. Besides daily practices, selecting the right bedding and creating a conducive sleep environment are crucial for enhancing sleep quality.
