Typhoon Krathon causes NT$388 mn in agricultural losses in Taiwan
According to the Chinese News Agency (CNA), Taipei News, Typhoon Krathon has caused disasters in many places in Taiwan and also led to serious agricultural losses.
The agricultural department of the government reported on Oct. 6 that the total agricultural losses in Taiwan amounted to about NT$388 million, with Pingtung's losses amounting to the highest of NT$238 million, accounting for more than 60% of the total losses in all counties.
Krathon made landfall in Kaohsiung on Oct. 3 and caused serious damage in the southwestern part of Taiwan as well as the northern coastal areas during its onslaught on Taiwan. According to the Disaster Response Center of the Taiwan government, on the 6th, the number of notifications of typhoon disasters increased to 9,497, which resulted in 4 deaths, 1 missing person, and 719 injuries.
The typhoon brought strong winds and rain, causing serious losses to Taiwan's agricultural industry. The agriculture department of the government said on the 6th that Taiwan's agricultural losses totaled about 388 million yuan, Pingtung lost NT$238 million, Kaohsiung lost NT$88.96 million, Taitung County lost NT$35.14 million, and Penghu County lost NT$17.52 million.
The total loss of agricultural products amounted to NT$316 million, with 4,132 hectares of crops damaged and 20% of the total damage; the damaged crops were mainly bananas, guavas, dates, papayas, etc., of which bananas were the most seriously damaged, with a loss of NT$60.93 million.
The loss of civil facilities amounted to about NT$72.02 million, of which NT$34.04 million was caused by the loss and burial of farmland, NT$13.73 million was caused by the loss of agricultural facilities, and NT$17.5 million was caused by the loss of fishery facilities.
