Understanding the Mainland: Leung calls for deeper engagement from HK

CY Leung

Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, CY Leung, expressed pride in the significant progress the nation has made over the past 75 years.

He stated that Hong Kong has seized development opportunities by riding on the wave of the country's reform and opening up, asserting that without these reforms, today's Hong Kong would not exist.

He pointed out that there are still many areas where mainland China needs Hong Kong's assistance, such as the deepening of the legal profession mentioned in the Third Plenary Session. He believes local lawyers can provide valuable support, expanding their development opportunities across the mainland.

Leung also highlighted the social, political, and economic differences between the mainland and Hong Kong. To promote a better understanding among Hong Kong residents regarding the mainland, he stated that much work remains to be done. Given the rapid changes in the mainland, it is essential to have a thorough understanding by visiting the region personally. Simply conveying information to Hong Kong residents without deeper engagement could lead to empty rhetoric over time.

He mentioned that over the past six to seven years, he has spent about 40 to 50 percent of his time working on the mainland, where numerous opportunities abound. He believes that various industries in Hong Kong should recognize and connect with these opportunities.
