The Office of the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCPD) has recently noted that LinkedIn updated its privacy policy to allow the use of its users' personal data and content to train generative artificial intelligence (AI) models for content creation. The default user setting for this consent has been set to "on" (i.e., "agreed").
The PCPD has expressed concern over this development and has written to LinkedIn for clarification. Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data Ada Chung urges LinkedIn users to pay attention to the updates in the privacy policy and understand its contents to decide whether to agree to the use of their data for training AI models. If LinkedIn users do not wish to authorize the use of their data, they can make changes in their account settings.
As of June 30, 2024, there are approximately 3.52 million LinkedIn users in Hong Kong.
