WTT China Smash update: World No.1 Wang Chuqin lost to Anders Lind
Yesterday (Oct. 1), world No. 1 Wang Chuqin was out of the Men's Singles at China Smash 2024, after suffering a surprising Round of 32 defeat to Anders LIND 3-1.
Despite winning the second game, Wang was unable to maintain momentum, with the final scores reading 11-13, 11-9, 6-11, 7-11.
As of now, the third day of the main draw in the 2024 WTT China Smash has concluded.
In the Women's Singles, world No. 1 Sun Yingsha matched against her compatriot Kuai Man and secured victories in the round of 32.
Fan Siqi, who defeated No. 3 seed Wang Yidi, continued her impressive form by defeating South Korea Lee Eunhye in just 22 minutes. Wang Xiaotong overcame Austria's Sofia Polcanova 3-1 to set up a clash with Chinese Taipei veteran Cheng I-ching. Meanwhile, Japan's Mima Ito dispatched Luxembourg's veteran Ni Xialian 3-0 and will face South Korea's Kim Nayeong, who staged a remarkable comeback from two games down to defeat Japan's Miu Hirano.
In the Men's Singles, world No. 1 Wang Chuqin's defeat at the hands of Denmark's Anders Lind was the biggest upset of the tournament so far. Lind took the match 3-1, sending Wang out of the competition.
19-year-old Lin Shidong cruised past his teammate Xue Fei in straight games, winning 11-4, 11-6, 11-8. Wildcard entry Xiang Peng overcame Egypt's Omar Assar 3-1 to advance, while Chinese Taipei's Kao Cheng-jui knocked out Japan's Shunsuke Togami 3-1. Kao will now face Lind for a spot in the quarterfinals. Elsewhere, Olympic silver medalist and Swedish star Truls Moregard narrowly edged out Japan's rising star Sora Matsushima 3-2, setting up a Round of 16 clash with Japan's top player Tomokazu Harimoto.
In the Mixed Doubles, Xiang Peng and Liu Weishan defeated Hong Kong's Doo Hoi-kem and Wong Chun-ting 3-2. Xue Fei and Qian Tianyi swept India's Shah and Chitale 3-0. Lin Gaoyuan andWang Yidi also recorded a 3-0 victory over Teodoro and Kukulkova, while Yuan Licen and Shi Xunyao narrowly beat Austria's Gardos and Polcanova 3-2. Lin Shidong and Kuai Man defeated Japan's Sora Matsushima and Miwa Harimoto 3-0.
