Today (Sept. 27), the Search Committee of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) unanimously approved the appointment of Professor Lo Yuk-ming, the current Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Medicine who is known as the "Father of Non-invasive Prenatal Testing", as the next university president.
Professor Tuan Sung-chi, President of CUHK, has recently submitted his resignation, which the Council has accepted. He will remain in office until January next year.
Professor Lo met with CUHK students, faculty, and alumni yesterday afternoon (Sept. 26).
During the meetings, he stated that he was born and raised in Hong Kong and has had a strong interest in science since childhood. After graduating from the University of Cambridge, he returned to Hong Kong in 1997 and has held various positions.
When asked why he wanted to become president, he mentioned that he has served CUHK for 27 years and has a deep attachment to the university, believing it is time to leverage the experience he has accumulated over the years.
He also expressed that he will focus more on artificial intelligence if elected president.
Under Professor Lo's leadership, CUHK's Faculty of Medicine has become one of the top 30 medical schools in the world over the past 40 years. It is the only medical school in Asia that has ranked in the top 50 globally in the "Academic Ranking of World Universities."
