An irregular group of four digits is the code for Chinese names, which is designed to facilitate the input of names by governments or organizations. The Chinese Commercial Code is a four-digit number ranging from "0001" to "9999", with each group of digits representing a Chinese character. In Hong Kong, it is used in filling out many forms and documents.

Unlike the Mainland's 18-digit ID card number, the format of the HK ID card number is 1 letter of the alphabet + 6 digits + 1 digit or letter in brackets.

The letters at the beginning of an identity card number do not have any special meaning and are simply used in sequence. However, the Immigration Department has indicated that when the number of a particular letter is fully utilized, the Registration of Persons Office will issue an ID card beginning with another letter.

Then the six digits have no special meaning and are randomly generated by the system.

The last digit/letter in brackets is the verification code, which is based on a thorough calculation method as follows:

  • First, digitize the letters of the alphabet before the number, i.e. A=1, B=2 ...... and so on;
  • Multiply each digit (including the letters of the alphabet) by 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, and 2 in that order;
  • Add up the results and divide by 11 to find the remainder;
  • Subtract the remainder from 11 to get the number in a bracket, if the number is exactly 10, replace it with A.
