Invasive GBS ST283: How to protect yourself from this emerging health threat
Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection has reported that recently, 27 people in Hong Kong have been infected with the invasive Group B Streptococcus(GBS) ST283, resulting in two deaths suspected to be linked to exposure to freshwater fish.
The following information on the transmission and prevention of ST283 is provided by the Department of Health for the public's reference:
What is invasive GBS ST283?
GBS typically resides in humans, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and fish. ST283 is one of the more virulent strains of this bacterium, capable of causing invasive diseases even in healthy adults or those with fewer illnesses.
How does it spread?
While the exact route of most ST283 infections is unknown, the literature suggests that infections are associated with the consumption or improper handling of contaminated food, and reports indicate the presence of ST283 in freshwater fish, especially farmed fish.
What are the symptoms? Who is more susceptible?
Infection with ST283 can lead to sepsis, suppurative arthritis, meningitis, and infectious endocarditis. Older adults or individuals with weakened immune systems may be at higher risk of infection.
How can it be prevented?
- When buying or selling fish, avoid direct contact with the fish body, and consumers should not use towels provided by the store. After touching any uncooked aquatic products, wash your hands immediately with soap and water.
- When handling aquatic products, wear gloves to prevent direct contact with the products or wastewater, and thoroughly wash hands afterward.
- Avoid direct contact with aquatic products if you have any wounds on your hands. If a wound occurs while handling aquatic products, clean it thoroughly immediately, cover it with a waterproof dressing, and seek medical attention if it becomes infected.
- Do not consume any raw or undercooked freshwater fish or aquatic products. Ensure that food items such as hot pot ingredients or porridge containing aquatic products are thoroughly cooked.
