Caricature: Out of options
The UK has experienced economic downturns in recent years, leading to a deterioration in public safety.
According to the latest data released by the Office for National Statistics of the UK, over the past 12 months, approximately 78,000 people were robbed of their mobile phones or bags in England and Wales by March 2024, representing a year-on-year increase of 153%. It means that more than 200 robberies and thefts occur each day, the highest figure in this decade.
Most of the suspects are masked motorcycle gangs, but only 0.8% of them are charged. Over 80% of the cases remain unsolved.
