The Centre for Food Safety has announced that following notifications from the World Organization for Animal Health about an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in Guldborgsund Municipality, Denmark, it has directed the industry to immediately suspend the import of poultry meat and poultry products, including eggs, from the affected area to protect public health in Hong Kong.

A spokesperson from the Centre stated that according to data from the Census and Statistics Department, Hong Kong imported approximately 490 metric tons of chilled poultry meat from Denmark in the first six months of this year.

The Centre has been in contact with Danish authorities regarding the outbreak and will continue to closely monitor updates from the World Organization for Animal Health and relevant authorities, and will take appropriate actions based on the developments of the outbreak.
