Edgar Cheung expresses hope for more personal space
Hong Kong foil fencer Edgar Cheung Ka-long made his first public appearance yesterday (Sept. 11) and shared some of his thoughts after winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
He said he felt the enthusiasm and support from the public, which is a great impetus for Hong Kong athletes.
However, he hoped that the public would give him more personal space since he is an introverted person.
"Frankly speaking, I am still not used to receiving so much attention. After all, athletes may not be able to deal with the pressure from the public the best way. I am also a little bit introverted. I hope that people can give us more personal space." He said.
Cheung also thanked his family and coaches for their continuous support and said that he has already rejoined the training program. However, he said that it is still too early to say whether he will participate in the next Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
"There is still a long way to go before the next Olympics. To some extent, it depends on the scores and the physical condition at that time." He said.
As for the construction of a new fencing stadium in the future, he said he was very happy and looking forward to it.
"In the past, we had to rely on the temporary reconstruction of some large venues to organize competitions. So if Hong Kong has its own fencing stadium, we will be very happy and supportive." He said.
