Typhoon Yagi causes significant damage in Haikou, economic losses estimated at 26.324bn Yuan

On September 7, the Emergency Command for Typhoon Yagi held a press conference in Hainan Province. Haikou Mayor Ding Hui reported that as of 5 PM on September 7, the typhoon had affected 1.2681 million people in Haikou, resulting in direct economic losses of approximately 26.324 billion yuan.

Typhoon Yagi is noted as the strongest typhoon to hit Haikou since the city's establishment, with the longest duration of level 12 winds, the highest instantaneous rainfall, and the largest affected population for an autumn typhoon. After landfall in Wengtian, Wenchang, Yagi swept through Haikou from east to west, with maximum wind speeds exceeding level 17. The level 12 wind circle began affecting Haikou at 3 PM on September 6 and lasted for a full 8 hours until it left at 11 PM.

As of 5 PM on September 7, the impact of Typhoon Yagi included 1.2681 million affected individuals in Haikou, with 105,500 people urgently relocated, 209,800 people needing assistance, one accidental death due to the disaster, 401 collapsed houses, 32,424 damaged houses, over 167,800 fallen trees, and 56,742 hectares of crops affected, leading to direct economic losses of approximately 26.324 billion yuan.

Ding Hui stated that after the level 10 winds subsided, Haikou quickly devised a recovery plan, forming 11 specialized teams for transportation, power supply, water supply, and other essential services to expedite the repair of damaged infrastructure.

As of 5 PM on September 9, all traffic controls on bridges and tunnels in Haikou had been lifted, with 479 roads restored for traffic. Efforts were ongoing to clear 21 remaining roads. The Mipu, Yongzhuang, and Rujun water plants and the Longtang water source plant had resumed production, with water expected to reach user terminals by early morning. In terms of power supply, 320,000 households experienced outages, with 100,000 restored, accounting for 31%. Repairs were underway. Communication networks faced 5,798 base station outages, with 1,739 restored, representing 30%, and efforts were focused on repairing the remaining 4,059 stations.
