Super Typhoon Yagi approaches: What to know about taxi charges during extreme weather
As Super Typhoon Yagi approaches Hong Kong with winds over 200 km/h, HK Observatory will issue Typhoon Signal No. 8 at 6:20 p.m. today (Sept.5). According to our journalist's first-hand experience, some taxi drivers have been observed charging extra fees during No. 8 to increase their extra income.
However, charging extra during Signal No. 8 is illegal in Hong Kong. According to Hong Kong's Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) Regulations, overcharging and failing to display taxi meters properly are serious offenses, punishable by up to 6 months in prison and a HK$10,000 fine.
If passengers voluntarily offer tips or gratuities, it is not considered illegal. Taxi drivers face higher risks during extreme weather, and some seek additional compensation, but they must obtain the passengers' consent first.
