The China Internet Network Information Centre (CNNIC) released its 54th Statistical Report on Internet Development in China at the end of August. The Report shows that as of June 2024, there were nearly 1.1 billion Internet users in China (1,099.67 million), an increase of 7.42 million from December 2023, with an Internet penetration rate of 78.0 percent.

China has added 7.42 million new Internet users, mainly young people aged 10 to 19 and the elderly. Among them, teenagers accounted for 49.0 percent of the new Internet users, and groups aged 50-59 and 60 and above accounted for 15.2 percent and 20.8 percent of the new Internet users respectively.

Among the new Internet users, entertainment and social needs most inspired Internet users to go online, and short video applications accounted for 37.3% of the Internet applications first used by this group.

With the growing richness of online service scenarios, more and more users are enjoying the convenience of life services through online means. As of June, 50.3%, 20.7% and 17.3% of Internet users had purchased online services such as delivery, in-store catering, movies and leisure and entertainment, respectively. Mobile payment services for the elderly continue to improve.

As of June, the usage rate of online payment among Internet users over 60 years old in China had reached 75.4 percent. For foreigners coming to China, innovative mobile payment services continued to optimize payment convenience. In the first half of the year, more than 5 million entry personnel used mobile payment, a four-fold increase year-on-year; more than 90 million transactions, amounting to more than 14 billion yuan, both a seven-fold increase year-on-year.

With the introduction of policies to guide the micro-short drama industry, the creation and production of micro-short dramas are moving towards standardization. The Report shows that as of June, users of micro-short drama accounted for 52.4 percent of netizens as a whole, short-video users accounted for 95.5 percent of Internet users as a whole, and long-video users accounted for 65.2 percent of Internet users.
