Caricature: Fraud in HK
Frauds concerning impersonating customer service were rampant in Hong Kong in the first seven months of this year, causing losses of nearly HK$600 million. There were even more than 1,000 cases in July.
The police launched an operation last Thursday (Aug. 22) and arrested 11 people, including Malaysian fraudsters, for conspiracy to defraud and using of false instruments, with 80,000 telephone cards seized.
A total of 11 people, including six Malaysian men, two local men, and three local women, aged between 20 and 67, were arrested.
Initial investigations revealed that the multinational fraud syndicate paid HK$10,000 to HK$16,000 per month to send their Malaysian accomplices to Hong Kong as tourists. They produced fake Hong Kong identity documents or travel documents by swapping photos and registered local pre-paid telephone cards on the Internet under their real names, which were used for fraud regarding impersonating customer service.
