'Challenging the best version of yourself', Chinese Olympians inspire public

Members of China's Olympic delegation to the Paris Olympics gathered at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Tuesday (Aug. 20) to celebrate their brilliant achievements at the 33rd Summer Olympic Games in Paris.

At the conference, Olympic heroes made their appearances to accept the praise of the country and the people, including Ma Long, Fan Zhendong, Chen Meng, Wang Manyu, Sun Yingsha and Wang Chuqin in table tennis, Quan Hongchan in diving, Pan Zhanle and Zhang Yufei in swimming, as well as Zheng Qinwen in tennis and Sheng Lihao in air rifle. They were dressed in red and white uniforms, and their red blazers showed their solemnity and added a bit of youthful vigor.

"Sportsmanship is about challenging the best version of yourself," said Chinese tennis player Zheng Qinwen, who made history after defeating Croatia's Donna Vekic to become the first athlete from the country to win a singles gold medal in tennis.

"It doesn't always mean competing with others, but rather doing your best within your capabilities. Not letting yourself down, I think that's what sportsmanship is all about," said Zheng.

Swimmer Zhang Yufei, with a string of medals, appears at the venue.

When recalling competing with a fever and eventually winning the bronze medal in the 200m butterfly, Zhang said she was prepared to go to the hospital but decided to give it her best shot.

"Had I withdrawn, I wouldn't have this medal. Witnessing the crowd waving the five-star red flags, cheering me on, and offering solace on the field, I felt the support of 1.4 billion Chinese people behind me," Zhang said.

"Don't give up. Sometimes you may want to give up halfway, but how do you know the result if you don't stick with it? If you have a dream, go after it, don't be afraid of failure," said China's teenage Olympic diving champion Quan Hongchan.
