
A man and a girl were trapped underneath a tram (No. 38) traveling eastbound to Happy Valley off Kennedy Town Swimming Pool at Sai Cheung Street North, Sai Wan, this morning (Aug. 15), with the girl succumbing to her injuries after being taken to hospital.
Hong Kong Tramways said it was deeply saddened by the incident and offered its deepest condolences to the injured and the girl's family.
Hong Kong Tramways said that according to preliminary information, the tram involved in the incident was operating under normal conditions when it arrived at Queen's Road West near Kennedy Town Swimming Pool at about 10:45 a.m. today and hit four pedestrians crossing the road, including a man, a foreign domestic helper, and two children.
The driver of the tram, after braking the tram and getting off to understand the situation of the pedestrians, found that the man and a child were trapped underneath the tram and called the police at once.
The four injured were immediately taken to the hospital for treatment. One girl died after being taken to the hospital, two others needed to stay in the hospital for treatment, and the foreign domestic helper suffered minor injuries and did not need to stay in the hospital. No one on the tram was injured.
Hong Kong Tramways said that the driver involved in the incident had been employed by the company for four years and nine months. During that time, he has no bad driving record. The incident occurred on the third route of his journey today.
The driver has been suspended from duty and assisted the police in the investigation; the cause of the incident is still under investigation. Normal service was resumed at 11:50 a.m.
The tram company also cooperates fully with the police in the investigation.
