The Great Wall of China is one of the greatest architectural feats in the history of human civilization. Initially built more than 2,000 years ago during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, it was linked after the unification of China under the Qin Dynasty to form what we now know as the Great Wall, further expanded on a massive scale during the Han and Ming dynasties. It actually consists of numerous walls and runs for more than 21,000 kilometers. It serves as a cultural symbol of safeguarding peace.
There's a saying in China: "He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man". Every year, more than 10 million people flock to the Great Wall of China, making it one of the world's most popular tourist attractions.
Among all sectors of the Great Wall, the Mutianyu Great Wall and the Badaling Great Wall are two popular choices.
The Mutianyu Great Wall
The Mutianyu Great Wall was first built in the Northern Qi Dynasty (550-557). It is relatively more popular internationally. There are usually fewer people here compared to the Badaling Great Wall.
There are 23 watchtowers distributed at close intervals along the wall. They are located not only on the main wall but also at the distinctive "branch city". Branch cities are built on the hill ridge against the inner or outer side of the wall.
The Badaling Great Wall
Most of the preserved parts of the Badaling Great Wall were built and reinforced during the Ming Dynasty. It is closer to the Beijing city and many people choose to go here as it is more convenient. Compared to the Mutianyu Great Wall, tourists can travel to the Badaling Great Wall by high-speed railway.
The Badaling Great Wall can be divided into two sections: North and the South
North Section
- There are 12 watchtowers in total in this section.
- The stone stele engraved with "He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man" is along this section, close to No. 8 North Tower; it is also the highest point in this area, offering a great bird's-eye view.
South Section
- There are 7 watchtowers.
- The slope in the South Section is more gentle and less energy-consuming.
