Pan Zhanle responds calmly to Hawke's question on his performance
Pan Zhanle clocked 46.40 seconds in the Men's 100m Freestyle at the Paris Olympics, which enabled him to win the gold medal and even broke the world record. This is also the first gold medal in the Men's 100m Freestyle in China's swimming history.
However, the feat has been questioned by a famous Australian swimming coach, Hawke, who believes such a performance is beyond human capabilities.
Pan said calmly in an interview with CCTV in the face of such comments, "His words 'make sense' in some ways. He should say it a few more times to mislead those Westerners."
"People often tend to set their limitations while I do not. I would accept positive ones while challenging and breaking those that are bad for my development."
He also won the gold medal in the Men's 4x100m medley relay on his 20th birthday.
When interviewed by CCTV, he said, "There was a time when I didn't make achievements and yet hoped that others could say 'Happy birthday' to me by posting something on social media, which I think is very short-sighted. Now I regard my birthday as a normal day. For me, there's still a long way to go."
