The Police launched a large-scale thematic enforcement campaign in Hong Kong today (Aug. 7) to combat inattentive driving and illegal cycling on pavements. On the first day of the operation, police officers took enforcement action at the junction of Sha Kok Street and Yat Tai Street, off Sha Kok Estate in Sha Tin, stopping about 10 people cycling on pavements in half an hour and issuing them with summonses, while some passers-by who jaywalked were also given verbal warnings.
A large number of traffic police were stationed at the junction at about 10 am this morning, and many visible cyclists saw their uniforms and dropped off their bikes to push them. If anyone who pedaled along the cycle track to the end still stepped onto the pavement, they would be stopped by the traffic police and issued with a ticket. According to the law, reckless use or riding of a bicycle is subject to a fine of HK$500 for the first offense and a fine of HK$1,000 and imprisonment for three months for a second offense; careless use or riding of a bicycle is subject to a maximum fine of HK$500.
According to the latest police figures, 392 people were involved in fatal and serious injury accidents in the first half of this year, of which 51 died in traffic accidents. 7 fatal cycling accidents were recorded in the first half of the year, which is already more than the 6 accidents recorded in the whole of last year.
