Opinion | A slap in the face of civilization—America's hero's welcome for a convicted war criminal

Netanyahu came to lie, and what a world-class liar he is. Every sentence he uttered was interrupted by standing ovations in the joint session of Congress. He told his fawning, opportunistic audience that there are "practically no civilian casualties" in Gaza. And they lapped up his bare faced lies. The bigger the lie, the louder the applause.

He came prepared, hauling in four soldiers as heroes, a rescued hostage, and even a Holocaust survivor. He turned the focus on Hamas's October 7 massacre. As for the Gaza genocide, he assured his American audience that there are "practically no civilian casualties". But a letter to Biden signed by 45 US doctors and nurses appealing for an immediate and permanent ceasefire puts the civilian death toll at over 92,000 in Gaza, where virtually everyone is either "sick, injured or both", as epidemics rage and doctors hold babies' brains in their hands, infants deliberately targeted by Israeli snipers. This is a naked, made-in-Israel Palestinian holocaust.

As Netanyahu spoke, bombs were raining down on civilian targets. With many houses bombed out, frightened Gazans take shelter in houses still standing. That makes these civilian dwellings rich targets for Israeli bombs, and why casualties are so high. Typically, in one direct hit, out of 31, only six survived. There is no morphine for amputations or C-section births and no food for breastfeeding mothers. When Gazans went out to sea to catch fish for food, they were sprayed with machine-gun fire by Israeli soldiers.

These are terrible times to be Palestinian.

Israeli soldiers are authorized to shoot any Palestinians, including women and children. Food convoys have been attacked and robbed by Israeli extremists. If bombs don't kill them, starvation will. And if starvation doesn't do the job, disease will. This is a kill-on-sight massacre on a horrendous scale. There are far too many orphans, dead babies, and traumatized aid workers. For those lucky to be alive, it is a living nightmare of untreated wounds and empty stomachs. And yet, Netanyahu heroically quoted Winston Churchill, urging US lawmakers to "give us the tools faster, so that we can finish the job faster." By tools, he meant bombs, bullets, and fighter jets, and by faster, he meant finishing off the worthless lives of Palestinians.

The mass murderer of Gaza, with an international arrest warrant on his forehead, is getting the biggest hero's welcome of his political life in Congress. He had American lawmakers eating out of his palm. But out in the streets, angry protestors burned Netanyahu in effigy.

The protest now goes to Paris to be amplified by the Olympics. With US backing, Team Israel gets to compete in Paris with 24-hour protection courtesy of French security forces, while the Russian athletes are barred from competing under their national flag. Different invaders get different treatment. Double standards stink where the US dictates.

America has the money and the military muscle. But it has lost its soul. Once in the swamp, American politics is now in the gutter. The presidential match-up between Trump and former-prosecutor Harris is a delicious irony---a contest between "the criminal and the prosecutor". The prosecutor, however, is in bed with a convicted criminal, at home and abroad. How low can America sink?

In giving Netanyahu an obscene worshipful welcome, Washington has given the civilized world a slap in the face. Judges of the International Court of Justice are threatened with sanctions for issuing the arrest warrant against the Israeli prime minister. This sends out one clear message: Israel owns America, and its puppet master is in Jerusalem. If you doubt this, you are living on another planet. Netanyahu and Trump both belong behind bars. Yet they are calling the shots in the battlefield and the corridors of power,

Netanyahu shamelessly told America that the clash in Gaza is between those who "glorify death" and those who "sanctify life.", putting himself squarely in the noble category. Might is right. Black is white, and white is right. He is a God, wielding American weapons and deciding who lives or dies.

Can the fall of the God-defying American empire be far behind?
