Opinion | In a world turned upside down—Is God listening?

By Philip Yeung, university teacher

As the shots rang out at Trump's rally, he faltered but did not fall. And now, with his nine lives, Trump claims his victory is divinely pre-ordained.

No sooner had the bullets hit the wrong targets than US Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene took to her megaphone to tell the world that it is God's hand that has saved Trump's life.

So now, Trump is not only embraced by the Republican Party, but by God himself.

God has stolen the deal. The latest polls give him a landslide 71% of popular support, versus a measly 16% for Biden. Barring an apocalypse, the race is deep in Trump's back pocket.

Is it game over, or could lightning strike twice? God forbid, even if someone engineers an attempt on Biden's life, Trump supporters will claim that God wants to scare Biden to death. All is lost. Trump will swagger his way to his coronation at the Republican Convention this week and will steamroller his way into the presidency in November. Elon Musk, the planet's richest man with the sharpest political nose, instantly smells a God-given opportunity to make a downpayment on the ownership of the president, with a pledge of making a jaw-dropping US $45 million monthly donation to the Trump campaign. Biden's donations, by contrast, are drying up.

Even the money gods are on Trump's side.

Biden's plea for peace is lost in the hubbub. Who wants to listen to a whimpering old man living in Trump's giant shadow, and relegated to the political margins until his eviction from the White House? By defying the bullets, Trump now owns the news cycle. Unmistakably, this is Trump's time, and this is Donald's Dishonest Decade. Those on the side of good are in purgatory, and those up to no good are in paradise. America has nowhere else to go but downhill or down there.

The Republicans have been Fedexed a giant stroke of luck. The bullet that pierced Donald's right ear is the key to the White House. Trump now has the halo to speak as the prophet, and his second coming will be shouted from the rooftops. Forget the criminal charges. Aileen Cannon, a Trump-appointed judge has just dismissed the case against his illegal possession of classified documents. Jack Smith's indictments for the January 6 insurrection look dead in the water. He himself is scrambling to fend off charges that he has been illegally appointed as a special prosecutor. Even if he prevails, any guilty verdict against Trump will be overturned when it reaches the Supreme Court.

Trump is literally and legally bullet-proof.

Everything has conspired against Biden. He is now just an irrelevant also-ran—a sniveling old man begging for sympathy on the sidelines. Perception is power, and right now, the unmistakable perception is that Biden is out of steam and out of luck. He will be outspent and outvoted by the big bad bully. For once, Trump the cruel trash-talker can even afford to be nice. He can practically sleepwalk all the way to the finish line. Who cares about the second Presidential Debate? It is sure to be a damp squib where no bullets fly.

America's future is in God's lap. Biden the pious Christian can only hope that God is having second thoughts. The Republicans are the top dogs, and the Democrats are the sorry underdogs. But remember, God giveth and God taketh. Biden, though, is not the only one having sleepless nights. The Ukrainians must be on their knees asking for a second divine intervention---an American president living in Putin's pocket is worse than God's curse. They better pray to the God of Thunder for a perfect swing---that the world's most dishonest golf player will be struck by a bolt of lightning on his favorite course, and this time, dies doing what he loves best. Bets, anyone?
