A committee of the House of Representatives of the United States (US) has earlier written to the US government requesting the imposition of sanctions against officials of the Hong Kong SAR government, judges, and prosecutors.
Attending a radio program today (July 20), the Secretary for Justice, Paul Lam, said that this is "not the first time" that the relevant practice has been done, and also said that he thinks that the party concerned should take it calmly and not to affect the relevant legal proceedings underway when they are targeting the ongoing judicial process and exerting pressure on the judges.
Lam mentioned that the completion of the legislation on Article 23 of the Basic Law would consolidate the country's confidence in the HKSAR Government and help "one country, two systems" to achieve stability and progress.
"The work of safeguarding national security is always necessary, and the Department of Justice will take complementary legal actions and do a good job in publicity and education."
On the resignation and retirement of some non-permanent judges of the Court of Final Appeal, Lam said that most of the cases in Hong Kong are not handled by non-permanent or overseas judges.
He reiterated that it is necessary to find suitable candidates for non-permanent judges.
