Kikipedia | A maths genius emerges: Controversy and curiosity surrounding Jiang Ping's unexpected success
Jiang Ping, an ordinary Chinese girl and a 17-year-old secondary specialized school student, has made it to the top 12 in a global math competition.
In the 2024 Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition, Jiang Ping placed 12th with 93 points. However, the top 11 participants came from well-known institutes including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Cambridge University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The event spreads quickly online in the Mainland. Some people question Jiang's score, others query she cheated in the competition or even faked her learning experience, while some believe that a mathematical genius has risen.
Subsequently, the official education bureau responded that Jiang Ping's score of 83 in maths in the monthly examination was true, and the computer used for the preliminaries was borrowed.
Is she a real maths genius? Is it a fluke that she made it into the top twelve of the competition?
The final result of the round of the Alibaba Global Mathematics Competition will be announced in August.
