Watch This | John Lee addresses controversy over 9-year-old swimmer's competition participation
Former Hong Kong swimming representative Alex Fong recently revealed that a 9-year-old swimmer from his swim school was barred from participating in the Hong Kong China Swimming Association (HKGSA) Championships due to the swim club's insufficient level.
Following a public dispute between Fong and the HKGSA, the government intervened, ultimately allowing the young swimmer to compete as an individual in the Age Group Swimming Competitions.
Chief Executive John Lee spoke to the press today (July 16), expressing his concern over the incident before the Executive Council meeting.
Lee emphasized that the government invests substantial resources annually to promote various sports through sports associations, including training athletes to develop talent.
He stated that each sports association must establish qualifications and rules, and if there are areas for improvement in their development, they should be addressed responsibly and pragmatically.
Lee underscored the importance of negotiation and communication in exploring potential optimizations.
He further mentioned that the HKGSA is scheduled to discuss the matter pragmatically with the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong (SF&OC) and relevant representatives.
Additionally, SF&OC is currently exploring ways to enhance organizational governance and regulatory codes, with the review results expected to be announced within the year.
Lee expressed his hope that the review results would be released promptly, making the regulations more aligned with the objectives of promoting the respective sports and assisting in athlete training.
