Watch This | HK youth highlights city's commitment to inclusive society at UN Human Rights Council

On June 26, Hong Kong youth representative Charmaine Ho addressed the 56th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland. Speaking on the topic of "Harnessing quality development to promote accessibility in an inclusive society," Ho highlighted the effective measures taken by Hong Kong to safeguard human rights.

Ho stated, "In the bustling metropolis of Hong Kong, the pursuit of quality development plays a pivotal role in championing accessibility and inclusivity within society. Through a steadfast commitment to social welfare, disabled accessibility rights, basic facilities, and convenience, Hong Kong sets a high standard for providing top-level services and accessible facilities while also embracing the vital contributions of NGOs and volunteers in promoting human rights and community service."

Central to fostering an inclusive society, Hong Kong has integrated universal design principles into its urban infrastructure, prioritizing wheelchair-accessible facilities and barrier-free public spaces. This dedication to accommodating diverse needs and enabling independent navigation for individuals with disabilities underscores the city's commitment to creating an equitable environment.

Moreover, Hong Kong's focus on delivering world-class public services and accessible amenities, from healthcare to transportation, exemplifies its commitment to service excellence and prioritizing the well-being of all residents. The city has invested over 120 billion dollars in enhancing barrier-free access within public spaces, shopping centers, and government buildings, ensuring that features like ramps and braille signage are widely available.

Beyond governmental efforts, the involvement of local NGOs and more than 100,000 volunteers has played a crucial role in advancing inclusivity within Hong Kong. These organizations have significantly contributed to nurturing a more inclusive and compassionate society through advocacy, community outreach programs, and humanitarian initiatives.

In her address, Ho concluded, "By harnessing quality development to promote accessibility in an inclusive society, Hong Kong exemplifies a blueprint for creating a more equitable and welcoming community for all. Through a holistic approach that prioritizes social welfare, service excellence, facility accessibility, and the collaboration of NGOs and volunteers, Hong Kong demonstrates a commitment to upholding human rights, fostering inclusivity, and empowering individuals from all walks of life."

As Hong Kong continues its journey towards greater accessibility and inclusivity, the city is an inspiring model for other global hubs to follow, showcasing the power of quality development in creating a more just and inclusive future for all.
