Lam Sai-hung urges taxi industry to improve services
In an interview, Secretary for Transport and Logistics Lam Sai-hung stated that the public has felt disappointed with taxi services. He expressed hope that the taxi industry will fulfill its duties and improve services to regain the general public's and tourists' confidence.
Lam Sai-hung said the government will study how to amend legislation more effectively to address the issue of unauthorized passenger transport services. Additionally, they will reference overseas experiences to regulate ride-hailing platforms more effectively.
Next month, the government will share the research results with the Legislative Council, the industry, and relevant stakeholders to collect their opinions and determine the way forward.
Regarding the "Northbound Travel for Hong Kong Vehicles" scheme, which has seen congestion issues at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge port during holidays and long weekends, Lam Sai-hung said the scheme has only been implemented for one year, and they are still gathering experience.
Lam mentioned that on the first day of long holidays, around 4,000 to 5,000 vehicles use the bridge daily. The government is currently negotiating with the Zhuhai authorities on how to manage the peak traffic flow.
Lam added that since the Scheme was launched in July last year, over 60,000 Hong Kong-registered private cars have completed the application process. The average daily usage of the bridge is around 12,000 vehicle trips, which is not considered high.
In the future, the government will explore ways to attract more vehicles, such as drawing more trucks from the Pearl River West, Jiangmen, and other areas to use the bridge to travel to ports and the airport.
