The Hong Kong government announced Monday that it has decided to suspend the implementation of the MSW Charging Scheme scheduled on August 1.
The Secretary for the Environment and Ecology, Tse Chin-wan, said today (May 28) that it is not time yet to set a new schedule for the implementation of the MSW Charging Scheme. There is a need for continuous publicity, and the scheme will be put forward again in due course.
Tse added that in the past few months, there has been an increase in the community's recognition and support for waste reduction and recycling. "We will expand our recycling services and do a better job of publicity in the coming year," he said.
The government will gradually distribute 20 designated garbage bags to public housing residents free of charge every month for half a year starting next month, according to Tse.
He said that he hoped to encourage the households concerned to try to find out whether 20 designated bags were sufficient within a month. The authorities will also provide information to educate households on how to separate and recycle properly. The Green Outreach will also join hands with District Council members and the Community Care Team to step up the relevant work.
