Edmond Hon: National security bill protects fundamental rights and freedoms of public
Edmond Hon, a native young law scholar from Hong Kong, delivered a video speech at the 55th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council on March 20.
He said, "Most of us still have vivid memories about the unprecedented social arrest in 2019. For that, today, we shall recognize Basic Law Article 23 legislation is a necessary move to safeguard Hong Kong. Article 23 bars and terminates personnels and activities detriment national security under a proper legal framework," he added, "Such framework effectively prevent and penalize illegal acts and endangering national security which ultimately protects general public's rights and freedom of speech some vital values of Hong Kong."
"The truth is the efforts to effectively prevent, suppress and impose punishment for illegal acts endangering national security are ultimately for better protecting the fundamental rights protecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of the public," he stated.
"I hereby urge you all to embrace liberty as we do and support us to do good to the city."
