HSUHK welcomes UAE royal delegation to discuss green sustainable development and family succession

His Highness Prince Sheikh Ali Al Maktoum of the United Arab Emirates visited The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) last week with a group of about 20 business associates to learn about the University’s research in the areas of green sustainable development and family succession. HSUHK was the only university visited by him during his engagements in Hong Kong.

The group was received by Professor Simon S M Ho, President of HSUHK; Dr John Leung, Associate Vice President (Knowledge Exchange) and Director of Institute of Continuing and Professional Education (ICAPE); and members of various Schools and departments. Dr Eugene Wong, Associate Professor of the School of Decision Science, presented his research findings on green supply chains and transportation logistics; Mr Albert Oung, Co-Director of Asia-Pacific ASEAN Green Deal Centre, shared his insights on ESG transformation in Asia-Pacific including the Gulf regions; while Dr Kenneth Kwong, Co-Director of Chinese Family Succession Research Centre (CFSRC), discussed the impact of communication and values between generations on family succession.

Prince Sheikh Ali Al Maktoum asserted that as a member of the royal family, he is dedicated to preserving cultural heritage. He also has a strong commitment towards sustainability, innovation, and philanthropy. He expressed his deep appreciation for HSUHK’s efforts in green sustainable development and family succession. Furthermore, he commended the University for its balanced approach to education, combining liberal arts and professional disciplines, and agreed that knowledge and a broad perspective are essential elements for future leaders to further advance the world and make it a better place.

Dr John Leung said that ICAPE and CFSRC are organizing an overseas trip to explore the similarities and differences in family succession between Chinese and non-Chinese families. The Prince showed his willingness to facilitate this royal journey, and hoped that HSUHK could organize an academic exchange delegation to Abu Dhabi and Dubai next year, allowing visitors to interact with other members of the royal Al Maktoum Family.

Dr Leung also highlighted that the royal visit not only contributes to further applied research in family succession, but also aligns with HKSAR government’s policies to attract business investments from the Middle East and assist them in establishing family offices in Hong Kong, thereby enhancing Hong Kong’s global financial status.
