The Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on Saturday (July 2) held a seminar at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre to learn and implement the gist and content of President Xi Jinping's important speech. Speaking at the meeting, Maria Tam Wai-chu, deputy director of Hong Kong's Basic Law Committee, said that President Xi's important speech at the meeting celebrating the 25th anniversary of Hong Kong's return to the motherland and the inaugural ceremony of the sixth-term government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region gave guidance to the sixth-term government of the HKSAR, encouraging all sectors to adhere to the original intention of "one country, two systems", giving full play to the wisdom of "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong", making full use of Hong Kong's advantage of gaining full support from the motherland and well connecting with the rest of the world, and striving for good governance, pragmatism, and the true benefits of the people.

Tam said President Xi pointed out that it is important to understand that "one country, two systems" is a complete system, and that the leadership of the Communist Party of China is the most intrinsic feature of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and that all residents of the SAR should consciously respect the fundamental system of the country, and that the Central Authorities exercise overall jurisdiction over the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, which is the source of the SAR's high degree of autonomy and its implementation of an executive-led system in accordance with the Basic Law and relevant laws.

Tam added that the practice of "one country, two systems" is pioneering, and after the handover, "Hong Kong people administering Hong Kong" with a high degree of autonomy is the beginning of true democracy in Hong Kong. She also said that in order to maintain the integrity of the "one country, two systems" principle, Hong Kong must insist on "patriots administering Hong Kong", which is a matter of national sovereignty, security and development interests.

She stressed that the adherence to "patriots administering Hong Kong" is crucial, so that the Central Government's overall jurisdiction over the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region can be effectively implemented, a variety of deep-seated problems can be effectively resolved, and Hong Kong can achieve long-term stability, making contributions to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
