An exhibition entitled "Habits and Haberdashery - Uncovering History and Heritage in the Hidden Attic", featuring around 70 artefacts provided by the Maryknoll Convent School (MCS) Foundation, will open tomorrow (June 24) at the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre.

Built in 1937, the Maryknoll Convent School (Primary Section) was declared a monument in 2008. It consists of an educational block and a convent originally used as dormitory for the Maryknoll Sisters. With the dwindling population of the Sisters in Hong Kong, the convent was handed over to the school sponsoring body, the MCS Foundation, in late 2019. During a structural inspection of the convent in 2020, the MCS Foundation uncovered in the hidden attic a range of valuable historical materials which reveal the unique history of the embroidery and sewing workshop set up by the Maryknoll Sisters in the convent. The exhibition aims to provide visitors with a greater insight into and appreciation of the architectural style and heritage conservation of the school, as well as the history of the Maryknoll Sisters, who have served for more than a century in Hong Kong.

Highlight exhibits include a bronze school bell once used to remind students of the beginning of class, purchase orders, paper embroidery patterns, and a vestment on loan from Mother House in Ossining, the United States, for the exhibition.

Co-organized by the Antiquities and Monuments Office (AMO) and the MCS Foundation and supported by the Lord Wilson Heritage Trust, the free exhibition runs until September 14. Details are available on the AMO's website or by calling 2208 4488.

The Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre is located in Kowloon Park, Haiphong Road, Tsim Sha Tsui.
