Hong Kong's Secretary for Education, Kevin Yeung said in a speech at an event today (Dec. 18) that the Education Bureau announced the curriculum framework for values education at the end of last month, which emphasizes the need for students to correctly understand the history of the country and appreciate Chinese culture and traditional values from an early age, so as to build a national identity.
Yeung added that national education must be included in the city's values education
"The Education Bureau has always been committed to promoting Chinese history and culture education, and in recent years has made the subject of Chinese history an independent compulsory subject in junior high school," Yeung said.
He added that the education sector must pass on correct historical knowledge and concepts to young people and play the role of a gatekeeper, as well as guide them to respect historical facts objectively and avoid being poisoned by wrong or biased views.
