Opinion | What miracle can presidential diplomacy do?! If only they can take a bold step back

There is a Chinese proverb, "Take a step back; there's the big ocean and the blue sky."

By Augustus K. Yeung

Introduction

Until now, the US and China have been operating on the assumption of competition and rivalry, leading to diplomatic war of words, and eventually military conflicts over the issue of China's reunification with Taiwan.

However, if the two superpowers switch the existing model from competition to sincere cooperation by persuading Taiwan to take part in peace talks, the world will be a much better place for the US, China and the whole world!

For America to be working on the assumption with China, the US and China, and the world stand to gain a handful of benefits and save tons of pain.

US working with China over the Taiwan Issue

Working with China to influence Taiwan to take part in peace talks, the US turns China, a rival into a genuine friend, which would in turn lead to China's full cooperation with the US and shore up the image of the UN not as an impotent and a sick man, but as a wholesome world body, safeguarding world peace and promoting regional economic prosperity among nations.

Financially, there will be no clash of the titans, and the US can siphon billions of dollars from its huge military budges to social development at home to upgrade the quality living standards of its poor people.

Militarily, the US soldiers, its servicemen and -women can return home from Asia-Pacific, as there will be no military confrontations whatsoever in the region. The US will no longer be needed to play the role of a "world policeman".

With China on America's Side, US will be Invincible

Consider Crimea. Russia's annexation of Crimea during the Obama administration was a bullying behavior. And there was nothing the United States could do--with China possibly siding with Russia, by subtly giving it a free hand.

Consider Korea. North Korea's "dear leader" will no longer be able to "blackmail" the US and its Asian allies, notably South Korea and Japan--as China is totally capable of restraining the ambitious young man, who is the third-generation consecutive leader after his father and grandfather.

Consider Sino-US relations. With China as its strategic partner, instead of Tsai Ing Wen--a US liability-- American can still maintain its position, assume the role and keep the status as the strongest nation on earth (with China satisfactorily taking a second seat).

Helping China over the Taiwan Issue is Helping UN/US

Helping China over the Taiwan issue, the United States is not only helping itself, but also giving the UN authority a boost. At present, the United Nations as a world body is not able to solve the existing global problems of military coups in Asia and Africa, which is becoming a trend, showing the world that the UN is unable, though willing to maintain world peace, not to mention creating economic prosperity.

Taiwan Will Experience Parity, Stability and Prosperity

A reunited Taiwan will see parity, social stability, economic prosperity, and peace of mind--much like the people in mainland China, which will be going green as President Xi Jinping has pledged. This greening of Taiwan will be greeted by grand assignments.

Tsai Ing Wen, for example, will be appointed ambassador to Russia, giving her the opportunity of sending postcards to Beijing, "From Russia with love." Su Tseng-chang to South Korea, where he can send Korean delicacy to … Yu Shyi-kun to Japan, where he can send Japanese goods to … and Joseph Wu to Lithuania, where he can send whatever he can find (if he's lucky) to whoever…

The Taiwan armed forces will be totally demilitarized, turned into unarmed policemen and -women on patrol. Later on, many of those who speak fluent English will be trained and dispatched to UN, serving as armed units, joining China's UN peacekeeping forces to serve the world.

The old soldiers who had followed Chiang Kai-shek to Taiwan will be "home for Christmas" in mainland China. As expected, they will be scrambling with joy for "home visit", unlike the US armed forces eager to exit Kabul…

President Joe Biden and President Xi Jinping will jointly be given the following honor: The biggest street on the island of Taiwan will be renamed as "Presidential Bulevard", honoring both great presidents.

All the Chinese people in Taiwan will enjoy full freedom of mobility and will be able to visit any and all parts of mainland China.

Conclusion

Linear thinking inevitably works Americans up to the point of confronting China, a country that the US had greatly helped during World War II--when China was devastated by the ferocious imperial Japanese army. And China was being pushed way up to its last piece of "free" land--the city of Chunking, China's war-time capital. Had it not been the American army and its airborne division headed by General Chennault whose "Flying Tigers" were nipping the Japanese buds of destructive war planes one by one, freeing the Chinese sky and turning the tide that ended Japanese aggression in China and Asia.

Therefore, cooperation is the only way that America can go on to dominate and lead the world, specifically by colluding with China over the contentious issue of Taiwan. Only this way, can America continue to lead the world for years to come, and not to worry about being challenged by China.

A grateful China knows how to return favors. A grateful China will be too busy harmonizing its ethnic groups and Special Administrative Regions, including Taiwan, Xinjiang and Tibet. A grateful China will be obliged to nominate US President Joe Biden for the Nobel Peace Prize, which is the best legacy old Joe can hope for.

Eminently, US President Biden will be a surreal Hollywood "hero". He will be internationally perceived as a great man who can work miracles.

And the great US president will become an instant honorary "citizen of the world", plus an official but intimate everlasting title, "friend of China"!

When presidents are wise, bold and buddies, why do they have to rely on their nation's brute force?!
