The opening ceremony of Hong Kong Maritime Week (HKMW) 2021 was held Monday (Nov. 1), enabling international and local stakeholders to gather together to promote Hong Kong as the preferred base for maritime business.

The event, co-organized with the Maritime & Port Board, the Shipowners Association and the Maritime Museum, runs from October 31 to November 6.

Officiating at the opening ceremony, Maritime & Port Board Chairman and Secretary for Transport & Housing Frank Chan noted that being an international maritime center, Hong Kong is not immune from global challenges faced by other port cities, particularly the disruptions caused by the pandemic.

2021 marks the fifth edition of the Hong Kong Maritime Week. With concerted efforts, it has become an annual flagship event of Hong Kong's maritime sector, he added.

Chan noted that, being an international maritime center, HK is not immune from global challenges faced by other port cities, particularly the disruptions caused by the pandemic.

"We put public health first and foremost; we also endeavor to do whatever we can to help ensure a smooth and steady flow of goods across the globe, with our port operating ceaselessly round the clock. Besides, we also facilitate sea crew changes, bunkering and reprovisioning in Hong Kong," Chan said.

The event offers 38 activities organized by 43 local and international maritime bodies.

It covers themes such as maritime education and career development, green shipping and decarbonization, marine insurance, maritime law and arbitration, maritime technology and digitalization, port and logistics, ship finance, ship management as well as general shipping and maritime issues.

Signature events include Asian Logistics, Maritime & Aviation Conference, World Ocean Summit Insight Hour, Greater Bay Maritime Forum and HKMW Orienteering Race 2021.

Through a series of physical, online and hybrid activities, including conferences, forums, seminars, visits, tours, competitions and a family fun day, HKMW 2021 aims to enhance public awareness towards maritime and port industries, and to encourage young people to think about a career in the field.
