Budget | HK$5,000 vouchers sought to get registered in summer
HK government will distribute electronic vouchers each worth HK$5,000 to eligible permanent residents and new arrivals aged 18 or above to boost local consumption.
Hong Kong Financial Secretary, Paul Chan Mo-po, says at an afternoon press conference on the 2021-22 Budget today (Feb. 24) that the vouchers will be handed out in five installments of HK$1,000 each, and people would be required to spend each installment within a specific period of time. The government will seek to start the registration of electronic consumption vouchers in the summer.
Chan says that after learning from previous experiences, they believe that the electronic voucher can be implemented in order to further promote local consumption in HK. He also points out that during the epidemic, local merchants utilize online platforms to sell their products, so in principle, the vouchers will be allowed to be used for online shopping, but not for overseas purchases.
