Roger Penrose, Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez received the 2020 Nobel Prize, the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institute announced on Tuesday(Oct.6) in Stockholm, Sweden. The Nobel Committee said the three recipients have been awarded "for better understanding of the universe, including work on black holes."

The announcement was delayed, the Committee said, due to a delay in contacting the winners.

Roger Penrose has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics "for the discovery that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity."

The other half of the prize has been awarded jointly to Reinhard Genzel and Andrea Ghez "for the discovery of a supermassive compact object at the center of our galaxy." the Committee said.

The Nobel Committee awarded the prize for physiology and medicine to Americans Harvey J. Alter and Charles M. Rice, and British-born scientist Michael Houghton on Monday(Oct.5) for discovering the liver-ravaging hepatitis C virus. Other prizes to be unveiled for outstanding work in the fields of chemistry, literature, peace and economics.
