South Korea was shocked by the horrific online sex abuse case in which at least 74 female victims were blackmailed and forced into sharing extremely disturbing and abusive sexual videos on pay-to-view “chatrooms”. Cho Ju-bin, 24, has been publicly identified as the leader of the group committing this crime.
Under the nickname “Doctor”, Cho allegedly operated one of the biggest chatrooms with more than 26,000 users who paid to watch these videos. Some have paid up to $1,200 for access. There are even 16 underage girls, one of whom is only 11 years old, among these exploited women.
The content of videos is extremely abusive, including forcing them to drink water from the toilet, putting insects into victims’ bodies, and engraving “slave” onto their skin with a knife. The chatroom operators contacted these victims and promised them highly-paid modeling jobs. After access to their personal information, the operators found ways to blackmail them by threatening to reveal their “secrets” to the public. The more these victims succumbed to their escalating requirements, the more control the operators had on these girls.
This case caused a nationwide outcry and fury with over 5 million South Koreans signed multiple petitions calling for authorities to release the main suspect’s name.
Cho is facing charges of violating the child protection act, the privacy act and the sexual abuse act, as well as abuse, threats, and coercion, according to police, who have now referred the case to prosecutors.
“Thank you for putting a brake on the life of a devil that could not be stopped,” Cho said as he was led away from a Seoul police station on Wednesday (March 25).
